Driving through the village of Banwell you may have noticed The Whistling Duck pub. If you did and stopped you probably regretted doing so, and went on your way as quickly as possible! That is how we viewed this pub until a friend suggested we drop in for a quick drink to see for ourselves how it has changed. Changed???

More like a complete overhaul that has lifted The Whistling Duck from a decidedly less than bog standard pub into a class of its own! The transformation is staggering! What was a grotty boozer on the edge of the village has been turned into a fantastic pub and restaurant. Furnished in the style of an Italian bistro, yet it manages to retain a true pub atmosphere.

The welcome is genuine. The staff smile and are attentive. They have much to smile about!

The furnishings are part pub and part lounge, and it works! In the bar you can relax on the deep, comfortable leather sofas, or take a stool at the friendly bar. We were so taken with the place that we decided to try the attached restaurant, and were lucky enough to find a table! The restaurant is very well appointed and the menu is quite definitely one of the best (possibly the best) we have come across anywhere in recent years. We were delighted to find that it actually lists the local producers that supply the kitchen! The wine list is excellent. When we left we knew that we had experienced something very, very special.

You must try it. The Whistling Duck, Banwell, is whistling a totally different tune these days!

CHRISTMAS DINNER 2006

"This year our meal was held at The Whistling Duck, Banwell, which for the past year has been under the ownership of chef Tim Collins. Tim was first the owner of Duets, when it was known as Mickey’s Diner. He moved to The Alms Houses in Axbridge and was head chef at the Woodborough, Winscombe. He is now building up trade rapidly, with good food at The Duck.

The food and ambience at our dinner were excellent and those who attended thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We can highly recommended the venue - and perhaps more of our members will be able to join us next year for our Christmas celebrations!"

The Bail & Simpson Families - Visited Christmas Day 2007

'Having a party of 10 including an 18 month old we decided to have our Christmas lunch at The Whistling Duck and what a wonderful choice.

We were warmly welcomed with Bucks Fizz, sherry, or orange juice and escorted to our table which was beautifully festive and offered tasty nibbles to enjoy whilst getting settled and ready for our lunch.

A delicious choice of starters, every one ordered and enjoyed by a member of our party followed by a syllabub to cleanse the palate before the main course. The turkey was succulent and tasty which together with the accompanying trimmings and vegetables all cooked to perfection, made it a meal to remember. There was plenty of time between courses so there was no need to hurry.

The Christmas pudding followed by mince pies, fresh fruit and chocolates with a cup of coffee completed this gastronomic delight.

We also had Boxing Day lunch which was a more traditional menu but again plenty of choice and everything cooked to perfection.

The members of our party would have no hesitation in recommending The Whistling Duck. If you are looking for a good varied menu with excellently cooked food, friendly service and pleasant decor any time of the year.
